Who we are and what we do
Shalesbrook Morris was formed in 1977 in Forest Row near Ashdown Forest in East Sussex.
We are named after the “Shales Brook” which runs through the village. Our costume reflects the colour of the forest in autumn and our foxy mascot.
The dances we perform are mainly from the Cotswold villages of Bampton, Adderbury, Ducklington, Fieldtown and Raglan. The dances are thought to be symbolic of rural tasks such as seed sowing and harvesting. The origins of Morris is uncertain but could date back to pre-Christian times and ancient fertility rites.
We dance locally through the summer at pubs, fêtes and fairs and raise money for local charities.
During the year we have a “Cream Tea Weekend” away – usually involving lots of dancing, laughing, real ale, cream teas and general merriment!
We practise on Thursday evenings from 8:30-10pm in the Peter Griffits Hall in Forest Row from September to May.
We always welcome new members and musicians – if you are interested in finding out more please e-mail us via our Contact Us link.
